Philippine Authorities Rescue Hundreds from Love Scam Syndicate

Authorities in the Philippines have launched a daring campaign against cybercrime by organizing a massive rescue effort that has freed a number of people who were victims of a love scam syndicate that was based in Bamban, north of Manila. 383 Filipinos, 202 Chinese nationals, and 73 other foreigners were freed from a facility that was posed as an internet gambling operation as a consequence of the well-planned raid carried out by the Philippine police. A Vietnamese man who managed to get away from the gang in February provided a crucial tip that led to the start of this operation. Love scams, also known colloquially as “pig butchering” scams, involve perpetrators assuming false identities to establish emotional connections with unsuspecting victims. These scammers exploit their victims’ trust and affection to extort money or manipulate them into participating in fraudulent schemes.
