Tragedy Strikes as Volcanic Eruption Claims Lives in Java: Search Called Off

In a melancholy turn of events, Indonesian authorities have called an end to the hunt for victims of a volcanic explosion on Java island that killed at least 23 people and injured dozens more. The eruption happened on Sunday, blanketing adjacent towns with a 3km (9,800ft) ash cloud and trapping climbers on the mountain's slopes who were there to commemorate the Immaculate Conception. Out of the 75 hikers present on the mountain on Saturday, 49 were successfully evacuated, three were found alive and rescued, while a tragic 23 lost their lives. Twelve survivors sustained injuries during the eruption. Mount Marapi , the most active complex volcano in West Sumatra province, remains at the second-highest alert level. The Volcanological Survey of Indonesia (PVMBG) has issued warnings, advising the public to steer clear of the area. At least 11 hikers lost their lives, and 12 others are missing following a devastating volcanic eruption on Indonesia's Sumatra island. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday as Mount Marapi, a 2,891-meter (9,485-foot) volcano, unexpectedly spewed hot ash and gas, engulfing a popular hiking trail. The victims were among dozens of hikers ascending the volcano when the eruption occurred around noon local time. Raditya Jati, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency, described the eruption as "very strong and sudden," highlighting the absence of early warnings from the volcano observation post. The eruption propelled a column of ash and smoke up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) into the air, triggering pyroclastic flows—fast-moving mixtures of hot gas and volcanic material—that descended the slopes of Mount Marapi.
