Malaysia Advances Trade Relations with GCC and UAE

Malaysia is actively pursuing a free trade agreement (FTA) with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and hopes to clinch a bilateral agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before the end of the year. This move is part of Malaysia's larger goal to strengthen its trade connections with West Asia and tap into one of the world's most important economic areas. According to Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Malaysia intends to form an FTA with the six-member GCC as a bloc. Furthermore, the country is negotiating bilateral deals with individual GCC countries, notably Saudi Arabia, which is leading the FTA negotiations on behalf of the GCC.
