Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Erupts Again, Prompting Evacuations and Heightened Alerts in Indonesia

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, one of the prominent stratovolcanoes within the Mount Lewotobi complex in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, erupted once more on Monday, January 2, 2024, casting a plume of ash and smoke soaring up to 10 kilometers into the sky. This recent eruption follows a series of volcanic activities that commenced on December 23, 2023, marking an escalation in the volcano's typical behavior. In response to the heightened volcanic activity, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) initiated evacuation efforts, relocating more than 3,000 individuals from 28 villages in the Lumajang and Malang districts to safer locations. The authorities raised the alert level to 3 (Siaga) on a scale of 1 to 4 and established a 4-kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano.
