Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, one of the prominent stratovolcanoes within the Mount Lewotobi complex in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, erupted once more on Monday, January 2, 2024, casting a plume of ash and smoke soaring up to 10 kilometers into the sky.
This recent eruption follows a series of volcanic activities that commenced on December 23, 2023, marking an escalation in the volcano's typical behavior.
In response to the heightened volcanic activity, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) initiated evacuation efforts, relocating more than 3,000 individuals from 28 villages in the Lumajang and Malang districts to safer locations. The authorities raised the alert level to 3 (Siaga) on a scale of 1 to 4 and established a 4-kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano.
While there have been no reported casualties or significant damage, certain structures such as houses, bridges, and roads have been covered by ash and volcanic debris. The BNPB has actively distributed masks, food, and other essential aid to affected residents and collaborated with various ministries to provide comprehensive assistance.
Standing at 1,703 meters above sea level, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki stands as one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, located within the seismic and volcanic hotspot known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Having exhibited intermittent eruptions since 2003, the volcano experienced a major eruption in 2015, causing injuries and crop damage. The recent eruption, as reported by the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG), resulted from the collapse of the lava dome at the summit, which had been steadily growing since November 2023.
PVMBG clarified that the eruption was unrelated to the heightened seismic activity in the region, sparked by the 6.2-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumba Island on December 31, 2023. As authorities continue to monitor the situation, residents are urged to remain calm and adhere to the guidance provided by local officials to ensure their safety amid this challenging period.
