In Japan, the issue of abandoned houses , or "akiya," has spread from rural areas to the entire country. There is more to the problem than just a drop in population; almost 9 million unoccupied properties make up 13.8% of all residential properties. A house may be abandoned because its owners have passed away, but other properties may be ignored because of money problems or family strife. One such property, located in the wealthy Negishi area of Yokohama, serves as a symbol of the problem. Despite its ideal position, the one-story house has suffered from neglect, with boarded windows and an overgrown yard creating a picture of ruin over the last decade. The main reason of Japan's akiya dilemma is the country's demographic upheavals, particularly in areas outside large cities such as Tokyo.
