Over 6,500 Expatriate Singaporeans Register as Overseas Voters for Presidential Election

Singapore's Elections Department (ELD) announced on Wednesday that more than 6,500 expatriate Singaporeans have registered as overseas voters for the upcoming Presidential Election in 2023. The contenders vying for the role of Singapore's ninth president include Ng Kok Song, former Chief Investment Officer of GIC; Tharman Shanmugaratnam, former Senior Minister; and Tan Kin Lian, former Chief Executive of NTUC Income. Out of the total foreign voters, 3,432 will vote via postal ballots, while 3,217 will cast their ballots in person at overseas polling places. This election marks the first use of postal voting in Singapore following revisions to the election legislation passed in March, allowing qualified Singaporeans residing abroad to vote by mail. Eligible overseas voters must have lived in Singapore for at least 30 days within the three years preceding their registration.
