Tragedy Strikes as Volcanic Eruption Claims Lives in Java: Search Called Off

In a melancholy turn of events, Indonesian authorities have called an end to the hunt for victims of a volcanic explosion on Java island that killed at least 23 people and injured dozens more. The eruption happened on Sunday, blanketing adjacent towns with a 3km (9,800ft) ash cloud and trapping climbers on the mountain's slopes who were there to commemorate the Immaculate Conception.

Out of the 75 hikers present on the mountain on Saturday, 49 were successfully evacuated, three were found alive and rescued, while a tragic 23 lost their lives. Twelve survivors sustained injuries during the eruption.

Mount Marapi, the most active complex volcano in West Sumatra province, remains at the second-highest alert level. The Volcanological Survey of Indonesia (PVMBG) has issued warnings, advising the public to steer clear of the area. The agency emphasized the ongoing risk of eruption and recommended the use of masks and goggles to shield against the lingering ash.

The decision to conclude the search and rescue operation was announced by Raditya Jati, the spokesman for the PVMBG, citing the persistent high potential for further eruptions. Over 1,300 people have been evacuated from affected areas and are currently residing in temporary shelters.
