Thai Foreign Minister's controversial meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi
The recent meeting between Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and Aung San Suu Kyi in detention has created diplomatic tensions within ASEAN. With failed attempts to engage Myanmar's junta in talks, this meeting marks an unconventional move by the Thai foreign minister.
Don Pramudwinai, who also serves as Thailand's deputy prime minister, addressed his ASEAN counterparts in Jakarta, highlighting Suu Kyi's good health and describing the discussions with her as a "positive development and a step in the right direction" towards a peaceful resolution in Myanmar. Suu Kyi has emphasized the importance of dialogue in finding a way forward.
However, Thailand's previous engagements with Myanmar's junta were inconsistent with ASEAN's policy. The Myanmar military's exclusion from official high-level ASEAN meetings was a direct consequence of their actions. Unfortunately, the junta disregarded the ASEAN plan, leading to a violent crackdown on anti-coup demonstrations and launching airstrikes on armed resistance groups. Both the junta and rebel militias have remained firm on their respective conditions, creating significant obstacles to initiating any form of meaningful talks.
