Bali Implements Environmental Preservation Tax on Tourists
In a significant move towards sustainable tourism, the Indonesian island paradise of Bali has announced the implementation of a $10 tax on foreign tourists entering the island, effective from next year. The tax is part of Bali's efforts to preserve its pristine environment and protect its unique cultural heritage.
Governor I Wayan Koster expressed the importance of safeguarding Bali's natural resources and cultural traditions. The tax will be exclusively levied on foreign tourists, including those arriving from abroad or other parts of the country. Domestic Indonesian tourists will be exempt from this fee, promoting domestic travel while still ensuring the sustainable development of tourism in Bali.
The tax, which is payable electronically, will be collected once per visit and will contribute directly to environmental and cultural preservation projects on the island. Bali, famous for its picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has experienced a steady recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting over two million tourists last year.
