The European Union (EU), a union of 27 member states aimed at promoting political and economic cooperation, is gearing up to enhance its collaboration with the Philippines on maritime security. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, expressed the EU's readiness to fortify ties with the Philippines during a significant meeting in Manila.

In a joint press conference held with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the crucial importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The EU's commitment to ensuring regional stability and security was evident in their plans to bolster cooperation with the Philippines on maritime issues.

During their meeting, various topics were discussed, spanning trade, climate change, and most prominently, maritime security. Both leaders acknowledged the significance of addressing maritime challenges and ensuring the protection of vital sea routes in the Indo-Pacific area.
