Indonesia's Wildfire Threat Escalates Amid Dry Weather Conditions

Authorities in Indonesia have issued warnings as the number of areas at risk of wildfires has doubled due to dry weather conditions. The situation is raising concerns over widespread disasters, occurring even before the peak dry season, which is expected between August and early September.

According to Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB), the number of wildfire 'hotspots' recorded between July 17 and July 23 has sharply increased to 12,701 from 6,082 seen just a week earlier. This surge in hotspots has alarmed officials and communities, given the country's history of devastating forest fires.

In recent memory, Indonesia experienced catastrophic fires in 2015 and 2019, which not only affected the nation but also blanketed multiple other countries in the region with haze. The incident in 2019 alone resulted in nearly $5.2 billion in financial losses across eight Indonesian provinces, as reported by the World Bank.

Apart from the financial toll, the human impact of these wildfires has been severe. Around 900,000 people reported respiratory illnesses due to the haze and air pollution caused by the fires.
