| Japan's Core Inflation Remains Stable, Commodity-Driven Pressures Easing |
In June, Japan's core consumer price index (CPI), excluding the cost of fresh food, recorded a 3.3% increase compared to the previous month. This rise from the 3.2% gain in May aligned with the median market prediction. The uptick in utility costs, consistent food price increases, and essential daily expenses contributed to further financial burdens on households.
While core inflation remains elevated, the BOJ is closely monitoring an index that considers only fuel prices (excluding fresh food costs). This metric serves as a more accurate indicator of trend inflation. In June, it showed a year-over-year increase of 4.2%, slightly lower than the 4.3% surge observed in May. Notably, this reduction, initially observed in January 2022, suggests a potential stabilization in the recent rapid surge fueled by business-led price increases.
