Tragedy Strikes Laguna Lake: 25 Lives Lost in Boat Capsizing during Typhoon 'Egay' and 'Habagat

A heart-wrenching disaster struck Laguna Lake as a boat carrying passengers was capsized by powerful winds and massive waves caused by Typhoon "Egay" and the southwest monsoon, locally known as 'habagat.' The calamity resulted in the loss of at least 25 lives, including children, and left 40 others injured, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). This tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief and sorrow over the region, as authorities and communities grapple with the aftermath of the Laguna Lake tragedy.

The unfortunate event unfolded when the MBCA Princess Aya, with its passengers on board, encountered the fury of the elements on the waters of Laguna Lake. Located around 50 yards away from Barangay Kalinawan in Binangonan, a 1st class municipality in the province of Rizal, Philippines, the boat faced the brunt of the typhoon and the accompanying monsoon. As the situation grew dire, the boat succumbed to the might of the strong winds and large waves, leading to its overturning.

In the wake of the disaster, emergency response teams and authorities swiftly acted to rescue those in distress. Rhonnie Ariola, the officer in charge of the municipal police station, reported that approximately 40 individuals were successfully rescued from the perilous waters. However, amidst the rescue efforts, the tragic toll emerged, with 25 people losing their lives to the unforgiving forces of nature.
