Vacant Parliamentary Seat in Malaysia's Dewan Rakyat: Remembering Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub

On July 25, 2023, the Dewan Rakyat, the lower chamber of Malaysia's Parliament, formally notified the Election Commission (EC) of the vacancy in the P161 Pulai Parliamentary seat in Johor. The seat became vacant due to the sudden passing of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP). The untimely demise of Salahuddin Ayub, a well-known political figure, has left a void in the constituency, necessitating prompt action to fill the seat in accordance with the Federal Constitution.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul emphasized that the procedure for filling a parliamentary vacancy is clearly outlined in Article 54 Clause (1) of the Federal Constitution. As per this constitutional clause, the Election Commission is mandated to fill the vacant seat within 60 days from the official declaration of its vacancy.

In fulfilling his constitutional duties, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul took the initiative to inform the Election Commission about the vacancy. On July 25, 2023, the EC chairman received official confirmation of Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub's passing. The late MP breathed his last on July 23, 2023, at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah, after undergoing surgery for a brain haemorrhage, which was determined to be the cause of his demise.
