Apple Removes Generative AI Apps from China App Store Ahead of New Regulations

In preparation for China's upcoming generative AI regulations, Apple has taken a significant step by withdrawing numerous generative AI apps from its China App Store. The new regulations, set to be enforced on August 15, mandate that AI apps operating in China must obtain an administrative license. Notifications sent to Chinese app developers cited "content that is illegal in China" as the reason for the app removals.

China has been at the forefront of regulating the rapidly expanding field of generative AI, with particular attention to language models like ChatGPT that utilize big language models. The country's cyberspace censors are concerned about the unpredictability and "black-box" nature of these language models, as they aim to curb the dissemination of unlawful or politically sensitive content.

Under the new regulations, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is responsible for issuing administrative licenses to AI apps, including those based on deep synthesis technologies (DST) and generative AI services like ChatGPT. However, the specific requirements and procedures for obtaining such licenses remain unclear, leaving developers uncertain about how to ensure compliance.
