Datuk Seri Najib Razak's Recusal Application Dismissed in 1MDB Trial

Datuk Seri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, who held the position of prime minister in Malaysia from 2009 to 2018, has faced a setback in his ongoing legal battle involving the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) trial. The attempt to recuse Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah from presiding over the trial has been rejected.

The recusal application made by Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been dismissed by Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who stated that the former prime minister failed to establish a substantial risk of bias. This decision comes amid claims that the judge's past association with former 1MDB general counsel Jasmine Loo Ai Swan could compromise the fairness of the trial.

Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Najib Razak's lead counsel, argued in court that the former prime minister's trial might be compromised if Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah remained in charge due to his prior connection with Jasmine Loo, whose name has featured prominently in the trial proceedings since its commencement in 2019.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah addressed the matter by confirming that he had not maintained communication with Jasmine Loo following her departure from the legal firm on December 31, 2008.
