As the date of the impending election draws near, Terengganu's residents prepare to exercise their democratic right on Saturday, August 12. Amidst this anticipation, the spotlight shines on a demographic whose influence is more vital than ever – the youth vote. With over half of the state's population under the age of 40, the youth's sway on the political landscape becomes a pivotal force that can shape the future course of Terengganu.
The significance of this dynamic demographic has not gone unnoticed by political parties vying for power in Terengganu. Recognizing the potential impact of young voters, these parties are putting their aspirations and concerns at the forefront of their manifestos and campaign strategies. With their sizable presence, young voters hold the power to steer the direction of Terengganu's political journey.
The sheer size of the youth electorate has prompted political parties to adopt innovative strategies and make significant commitments to secure their support. Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), for instance, has made a notable pledge by proposing the establishment of a youth entrepreneurship fund amounting to US$1.1 million. Additionally, PAS intends to offer interest-free loans for motorcycle purchases. These commitments underline the recognition of young voters as "kingmakers" in elections, as succinctly expressed by Ariffin Deraman, the PAS election director.
