Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, a dominant political figure in the country, was discharged from the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur on Friday after four days of medical checks, as reported by a source close to the 98-year-old former premier to AFP on condition of anonymity.
Mahathir holds a significant place in Malaysia's political history, having led the nation for a remarkable 24 years. Serving two terms as prime minister, from 1981 to 2003 and making a surprising return to power in 2018 at the age of 92, leading a reformist coalition.
However, internal disagreements caused the administration to collapse in 2020. Mahathir faced defeat in the 2022 general election but has now joined forces with ethnic Malay political parties, seeking to dislodge the current government led by Anwar Ibrahim, aged 75
