Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra Hospitalized After Arrest

Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who returned home after 15 years in exile, has been admitted to the hospital due to chest tightness and high blood pressure. This development comes just hours after his arrest and subsequent imprisonment upon landing at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport.

Shinawatra's homecoming on Tuesday was met with his arrest and swift sentencing to eight years in jail by the Supreme Court. Before being taken to the Supreme Court, the 74-year-old paid his respects to the King.

During his initial night in prison, the founder of the populist Pheu Thai party was transferred to the hospital at 1 am due to concerns about his medical condition and a lack of proper medical equipment. He had been held in a medical ward in Bangkok remand prison and was closely monitored, as he fell into the "vulnerable category" of prisoners.

A medical assessment on Tuesday revealed that Shinawatra had heart and lung problems, high blood pressure, and spine issues. The Thai Royal Police confirmed that a prison doctor examined him and promptly arranged his hospital transfer. Shinawatra's eligibility to seek a royal pardon on his first day in jail has sparked speculation that medical reasons could potentially lead to his release.
