Israel and Saudi Arabia
As the United States takes steps to promote normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may explore new avenues with China. Given China's role in mediating Saudi-Iran relations, Israel could seek Beijing's help in facilitating its own normalization with Saudi Arabia.
In June, Netanyahu received an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping to mediate the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, leading to plans for a visit in July. However, the trip was postponed due to domestic protests in Israel sparked by Netanyahu's decision for a judiciary overhaul.
Analysts suggest that Netanyahu's mission during his potential visit to China would be to fast-track Israel's efforts to normalize ties with Saudi Arabia. Pan Guang, dean of the Centre of Jewish Studies Shanghai, believes that China possesses leverage in the mediation process compared to the US, particularly regarding Saudi Arabia. He noted that while Saudi Arabia's relations with China are on the rise, their ties with the US are declining. The Biden administration's focus on human rights has troubled the Saudis, whereas China refrains from interfering in domestic affairs concerning human rights.
