As supermarkets in Singapore began charging customers for plastic carriers, a pressing question arose: what alternatives are people using to bag their waste? Channel News Asia (CNA) sought answers on July 3, the day the compulsory bag charge was introduced.
Shoppers shared that they had become heavily reliant on plastic bags and bin liners to manage their rubbish, attributing this dependence to the perceived lack of viable alternatives. For many, the concern was that without plastic bags, wet waste might create a mess, leading to dirty rubbish chutes and attracting pests like rats and cockroaches.
Environmental groups, however, offered a different perspective, advocating for a shift in habits towards reusing available materials instead of purchasing new plastic bags only to discard them after single-use. CNA sought advice from experts on sustainable waste management and experimented with their suggestions to evaluate their feasibility.
