ASEAN Summit 2023: Philippines to Chair in 2026, Myanmar Replaced

The 43rd ASEAN Summit, held at the Plataran City Forest of Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia, concluded today with significant developments, including the Philippines' announcement as the future chair in 2026 and Myanmar's removal from the chairmanship.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the President of the Philippines, declared that his country is prepared to take the helm of ASEAN in 2026. Addressing ASEAN leaders in Jakarta, he stated, "We will fortify the foundations of our community-building and navigate ASEAN as it embarks on a new chapter." This decision marks a significant shift in leadership planning for the ASEAN region.

Myanmar, initially slated to chair ASEAN in 2026, was replaced due to concerns surrounding its junta rulers. ASEAN leaders cited their desire to prevent "external partners" from convening in Myanmar and the junta's failure to adhere to a five-point plan agreed upon two years ago to address the crisis in the country. Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun confirmed Myanmar's withdrawal, stating, "Myanmar will skip ASEAN chairmanship in 2026." This move comes in the wake of global criticism of Myanmar's military regime for ousting Aung San Suu Kyi's democratically elected government.

The ASEAN Summit 2023 attracted a diverse array of leaders, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang, US Vice President Kamala Harris, Yohannes Abraham (U.S. Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indonesian President Joko Widodo warmly welcomed the leaders.
