Asian Games 2023: A Glorious Return of Sporting Excellence

After a year-long hiatus due to the disruptive force of the coronavirus pandemic, the highly anticipated Asian Games are back. This grand sporting event, second only to the Olympics in terms of scale, is set to welcome participants from 45 diverse countries, competing in a staggering 481 events spanning 40 different sports disciplines.

The history of the Asian Games traces its roots back to 1951 when the inaugural edition took place in New Delhi, India. Now in its 19th iteration, this quadrennial extravaganza has been hosted by nine different nations. Remarkably, 46 countries have taken part in these games over the years, underscoring their global appeal.

Beyond being a celebration of athleticism, the Asian Games 2023 assumes a pivotal role as an Olympic qualifier. A total of 74 coveted Olympic quotas are on the line across nine sporting disciplines, including archery, boxing, tennis, and more. Victorious athletes will secure their slots at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

While the majority of events at the grand Asian Games kick off following the glittering opening ceremony on September 23 in Hangzhou, China, team sports such as football, cricket, beach volleyball, and volleyball will commence earlier, on September 19. These early events set the stage for the epic sporting spectacle that is to follow.

The Asian Games 2023 promises to be a platform where star athletes take center stage. In athletics, all eyes will be on India's Neeraj Chopra, who faces formidable competition from Japan's Kitaguchi Haruka and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem. South Korea's high jumper Woo Sang-hyeok and the Philippines' pole vaulter EJ Obiena will also bask in the spotlight.
