The recently concluded 43rd summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) provided a spotlight on the growing alliance between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea (ROK), with a particular focus on President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s role in advocating regional centrality and universal multilateralism as a countermeasure to China's assertive actions in the South China Sea.

The roots of the Philippines-ROK alliance trace back to 1949 when diplomatic ties were first established. However, it was during the Korean War when this friendship was put to the test and significantly strengthened. The Philippines played a pivotal role as part of the UN forces that protected South Korea during the conflict. Over the years, this alliance has evolved to encompass trade, development, defense, and cross-cultural interactions.

One crucial aspect of their partnership is defense collaboration. South Korea has extended military support to the Philippine Armed Forces, focusing on strengthening territorial defense capabilities. This cooperation underscores South Korea's role as a crucial ally in the Philippines' defense and security, extending beyond mere economic exchanges. Notable examples include the Philippines' acquisition of guided missiles and FA-50 Golden Eagles from South Korea. The formalization of defense cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2019 accelerated Manila's procurement of defense products from Korean manufacturers. This shift signaled a strategic evolution in their relationship, moving toward comprehensive security collaboration that falls just short of an official treaty alliance, with a focus on substantial defense acquisitions such as frigates, corvettes, anti-ship missiles, and the possibility of submarines.

President Marcos' vision for a world governed by laws aligns with concerns over repeated violations of international law in the South China Sea. In line with the sentiments of many Southeast Asian nations facing similar challenges, President Marcos emphasized the Philippines' commitment to upholding freedom of navigation, overflight, and the rules-based international order in the region.
