UN Chief Warns of Global Fragmentation and Urges Peaceful Solutions at ASEAN Summit

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, delivered a sobering message at the ASEAN summit held in Jakarta, sounding an alarm about the world's growing risk of fragmentation as countries clash on various fronts. He issued a stark warning of a looming "great fracture" in the world's economic and financial systems, driven by divergent strategies in technology and artificial intelligence and conflicting security frameworks.

Guterres began by acknowledging the multitude of crises plaguing the global landscape, including the escalating climate emergency, ongoing conflicts and wars, increasing poverty, widening inequalities, and rising geopolitical tensions. He emphasized that the world appears to be stretched to its breaking point.

Amid these challenges, Guterres implored world leaders to seek peaceful and inclusive solutions. He called for the establishment of a mechanism to provide relief for debt-burdened developing economies. This mechanism would encompass measures such as payment suspensions, extended lending terms, and reduced interest rates, offering a lifeline to countries grappling with economic hardships exacerbated by the global pandemic.

One of the pressing concerns on Guterres's agenda was the deteriorating political, humanitarian, and human rights situation in Myanmar. He lent his support to the five-point peace plan put forth by ASEAN leaders in 2021 and urgently called for an immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar. The UN Secretary-General reiterated his plea to the military authorities in Myanmar, urging them to heed the aspirations of their people, release all political prisoners, and facilitate a return to democratic governance.
