The distressing incident unfolded on Sunday, November 19, when Iranian-backed rebels seized control of the Galaxy Leader cargo ship, thrusting the Filipino crew into an alarming predicament.

Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, expressing profound unease about the unfolding circumstances, emphasized the urgent and unwavering attention required for this dire situation. Working closely with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration, the House is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of the affected Filipino seafarers, deeming it an imperative of the utmost magnitude.

"In this critical juncture, we stand united at the House of Representatives, deeply troubled by the predicament of 17 valiant Filipino seafarers presently held captive by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. Such a situation demands our immediate and concerted focus," stated Speaker Romualdez in a released statement.
