In the outskirts of Jakarta, within the confines of a small warehouse, Muhammad Helmi is orchestrating an unconventional solution to address Indonesia's colossal food waste challenge. At the heart of his endeavor is Magalarva, a startup harnessing the potential of black soldier fly larvae to revolutionize the way organic waste is managed, repurposing it into valuable resources such as animal feed, fertilizer, and biofuel.
Helmi, a 25-year-old with a background in biotechnology, is on a mission to combat Indonesia's alarming food waste problem, a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental deterioration. The scale of the issue is staggering, as highlighted in a recent report by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), revealing that Indonesia discarded between 23 to 48 million tons of food waste annually between 2000 and 2019. This equates to 115 to 184 kilograms per capita per year and results in an economic loss ranging from Rp 213 trillion to Rp 551 trillion annually, equivalent to 4 to 5 percent of the country's GDP.
Helmi's journey began in 2019 when he, along with co-founder Andi Yudha, secured a grant from the Indonesian government to establish Magalarva. They initiated their efforts with a pilot plant in Bogor, West Java, where they explored various breeding and processing techniques for the larvae. Through experimentation, they found that the black soldier fly, a harmless insect with no disease-transmitting capabilities, was the perfect candidate for their ambitious project.
"The black soldier fly has a very high reproduction rate and a very high conversion rate. They can eat almost any kind of organic waste, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy products, and even paper and cardboard," explains Helmi.
Magalarva's approach aligns with the principles of circular economy and sustainable practices. By transforming waste into valuable products, the startup aims to mitigate the environmental impact of food waste while contributing to the nation's food security. The larvae's ability to consume a wide array of organic materials positions them as efficient waste processors with the added benefit of generating beneficial by-products.
Helmi's childhood fascination with insects, coupled with a commitment to addressing real societal issues, has driven the success of Magalarva. As the startup continues to grow, it exemplifies the potential of innovative, eco-friendly solutions to tackle pressing challenges, offering a glimpse into a future where waste becomes a valuable resource in the fight against environmental degradation and economic losses.
