In the realm of Malaysian cinema, a groundbreaking venture is set to challenge conventions and shed light on the complexities of ethnic tensions. "Pendatang," meaning "outsider" or "foreigner" in Malay, is a dystopian thriller that delves into the heart of the country's racial dynamics. Notably, it stands as Malaysia's first entirely crowdfunded film, reflecting a commitment to diverse storytelling.
Set in a future Malaysia where draconian laws forbid the mingling of different races, "Pendatang" follows a Chinese family confronting a moral crossroads. Moving into their new "allocated" home, they discover a young Malay girl hidden there. Faced with a perilous choice, they must decide whether to abide by oppressive rules or risk their safety to smuggle her back to "the Malay area."
Ng Ken Kin, the film's director, articulates his desire to explore themes of humanity versus extremism. His vision encompasses the transcendence of prejudices and fears in the face of adversity. The inspiration for the film stems from Malaysia's current socio-political climate, where racial and religious issues are often manipulated for political gain.
Lim Boon Siang, the film's screenplay writer, aims to craft a realistic and relatable narrative reflective of Malaysia's diverse and complex society. His aspiration is for the film to spark constructive dialogue, raising awareness and challenging viewers to contemplate their roles in shaping the nation's future.
Co-producers Amir Muhammad and James Chong opted for crowdfunding to involve the public in the creative process, providing a sense of ownership and participation. This decision also serves to bypass potential censorship and interference common in mainstream Malaysian films. The overwhelming support from over 2,000 backers, both local and international, allowed the campaign to surpass its initial goal of RM300,000 (US$72,000) in less than a month.
The crowdfunding campaign, launched on Indiegogo in September 2023, is set to conclude on December 16, 2023. The film is scheduled for release on December 21, 2023, on YouTube, allowing free access to a global audience.
