Phuket Launches Online Visa Extension System for Foreign Tourists

Phuket, renowned as one of Thailand's top tourist destinations, has introduced an innovative "e-Extension" system to streamline visa extensions for foreigners seeking prolonged stays in the country. Revealed by the Immigration Bureau on Tuesday, the online platform enables tourists to conveniently apply for visa extensions through the internet, eliminating the need for in-person visits to the immigration office.

Applicable to holders of 12 visa types, including tourist visas, non-immigrant visas, and retirement visas, the online system prioritizes convenience, speed, safety, and efficiency. By reducing the workload and congestion at the immigration office, authorities aim to enhance the overall experience for tourists.

To utilize the online system, interested tourists must register on the website, submit necessary documents, and schedule an appointment before presenting their passport to the immigration office for the visa extension stamp. This initiative aligns with the Immigration Bureau's commitment to simplifying operations and providing a seamless experience for tourists, particularly during the approaching New Year holidays.

Anticipating an influx of visitors, especially with Phuket being a focal point for the "Phuket Sandbox" scheme, the Immigration Bureau has assured preparations to accommodate the expected surge. This initiative, launched on July 1, 2022, allows fully vaccinated foreign visitors to enter Phuket without quarantine, provided they spend at least 14 days on the island before traveling to other parts of the country.

Since its inception, the "Phuket Sandbox" scheme has attracted over 100,000 tourists to the region, contributing significantly to the local economy with revenue surpassing 5 billion baht (US$150 million). The Immigration Bureau emphasizes its commitment to collaboration with other agencies and the private sector to support the tourism industry while ensuring the safety and security of both tourists and locals.
