In a significant development highlighting the robust defense partnership between Singapore and the United States, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has deployed four F-15SG fighter jets to Guam for a two-month training detachment with the US Navy. This deployment, which commenced on December 6, underscores the commitment of both nations to enhancing operational readiness and fostering interoperability among their military forces.
The primary objectives of the RSAF deployment involve conducting air-to-air and air-to-surface training exercises with the US Navy's Electronic Attack Squadron 132 (VAQ-132). VAQ-132 operates the EA-18G Growler, an advanced electronic warfare aircraft designed for jamming enemy radars and disrupting communications. This collaborative training initiative aims to facilitate the exchange of best practices and strengthen the capabilities of both the RSAF and the US Navy in executing integrated operations.
Lieutenant Colonel Tan Chee Wee, the RSAF detachment commander, emphasized the significance of the training in Guam, describing it as a "valuable opportunity" for the RSAF to operate alongside the US Navy and glean insights from their experience and expertise. The training sessions not only contribute to the operational proficiency of both forces but also serve as a testament to the long-standing and close defense ties between Singapore and the US.
Singapore and the United States share a bilateral defense agreement that allows the RSAF to conduct training activities at various US bases, including Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, and Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. This agreement underscores the strategic importance of the defense partnership, enabling both nations to collaboratively address regional security challenges.
The collaborative efforts between the RSAF and the US Navy reflect the shared commitment of Singapore and the United States to maintaining peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. With the US being one of Singapore's oldest and most crucial defense partners, both nations actively engage in bilateral and multilateral exercises. These include well-known initiatives such as Exercise Red Flag, Exercise Cope Tiger, and Exercise Pacific Griffin, further solidifying their cooperative defense efforts.
