In the heart of the South China Sea, the Philippines is embroiled in a complicated web of territorial disputes with China that go beyond simple questions of sovereignty to include issues of national dignity, security, and prosperity.
The Philippines' legal and historical claims, underscored by the 2016 arbitral ruling that dismantled China's expansive nine-dash line, form the bedrock of its stance in the region. Despite this, China's obstinate refusal to acknowledge the ruling and its unrelenting acts of dominance and aggression persist, violating Philippine rights and interests.
President Rodrigo Duterte's conciliatory approach, intended to bolster bilateral ties and secure economic advantages, has fallen short of expectations. While Duterte sought collaboration with China across trade, investment, infrastructure, and pandemic response, the promised aid and investment failed to materialize. Instead, China exploited the Philippines' passive stance, advancing its strategic interests in the South China Sea.
Militarization, artificial island construction, harassment of Filipino fishermen, and encroachment into Philippine waters characterize China's actions. Efforts to protest diplomatically have been met with insincerity and unwillingness on China's part to pursue a peaceful resolution.
Internationally, the Philippines' appeasement approach has eroded credibility and weakened alliances, particularly with the United States and like-minded nations. Failure to leverage international support, including backing for the arbitral ruling, has left the Philippines isolated against China's assertiveness.
A crucial shift in policy is imperative. The Philippines must assert its sovereign rights, invoking the arbitral ruling as the basis for dispute settlement. Strengthening maritime and security capabilities, alongside enhanced cooperation with the United States and allies, is essential to resist China's coercion.
