In the digital age, 10% of Singaporeans are addicted to online shopping, with the tech-savvy Gen Z population bearing the brunt of the burden. According to a 2023 Meta and Bain & Company analysis, Gen Zers born between 1997 and 2012 have a stunning 72% affinity for digital purchasing, with 45% engaged in social media transactions.
While the allure of convenience and variety captivates Gen Zers, the dark side of compulsive buying disorder surfaces through the heightened features of live streaming, shoppertainment, and nano influencers. Urgency induced by live streaming triggers impulsive buying, while nano influencers wield disproportionate influence, potentially steering Gen Zers towards unaffordable or unnecessary purchases. Social media intensifies peer pressure, fostering social comparisons that impact self-esteem and drive excessive spending.
The consequences of online shopping addiction extend beyond personal boundaries, affecting both individual and collective well-being. Financial distress, emotional turmoil, strained relationships, and compromised health are individual repercussions. Collectively, overconsumption, waste, and exploitation of resources are environmental challenges. Moreover, societal values such as thrift and responsibility face erosion.
To combat this growing concern, Gen Zers must seek support from friends, family, counselors, and support groups. Adopting positive coping strategies, like budgeting, tracking spending, and limiting screen time, is crucial. Heightened awareness of social media's influence and cultivating independent self-worth are paramount.
Addressing online shopping addiction requires not just individual efforts but collective responsibility. Gen Z in Singapore must recognize the severity of this issue and engage in preventive measures. With intervention and a shift in mindset, online shopping addiction can be curtailed, fostering a healthier, more sustainable future for Gen Z.
