Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has sparked a backlash after using a presidential helicopter to attend a Coldplay concert in Bulacan on Friday, January 19, 2024. The move, widely regarded as an abuse of power and an excessive waste of public cash, has stirred popular indignation and highlighted concerns about the president's apparent contempt for the daily problems of Filipino commuters who face the world's worst traffic.

Images and videos of Marcos and his wife, Liza Araneta-Marcos, arriving and departing from the Philippine Arena, the world's largest indoor arena, via the presidential helicopter quickly went viral on social media. Netizens expressed their dismay, accusing the president of insensitivity and extravagance, especially considering that the concert venue is a mere 32 kilometers away from Malacañang, the presidential palace, easily accessible by car in less than an hour.

Critics argue that the use of the presidential chopper, with an operating cost of approximately ₱200,000 per hour, was unjustifiable amid the country's fiscal deficit and debt crisis. The decision also raised questions about the necessity of the security pretext, as there was no imminent threat or emergency situation justifying such an extraordinary measure.

In defense of the president's actions, the Presidential Security Group (PSG) cited "unforeseen traffic complications" that allegedly posed a safety risk. PSG commander Jesus Nelson Morales claimed that the influx of 40,000 concertgoers led to traffic congestion, forcing the PSG to take "decisive action" by opting for the presidential helicopter. However, this explanation was met with skepticism, as many argued that the traffic situation was predictable and manageable, and that the president could have planned accordingly.

Critics also highlighted President Marcos Jr.'s seemingly nonchalant demeanor during the traffic ordeal. Witnesses noted his laughter and casual response when Coldplay's Chris Martin acknowledged the fans for enduring the traffic to attend the concert. This fueled skepticism about the security rationale provided by the PSG, further intensifying the public backlash.
