Filipino Olympian EJ Obiena Clinches Gold at Memorial Josip Gasparac in Croatia

In an electrifying start to the year, Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena secured his first gold medal of 2024 at the Memorial Josip Gasparac indoor event held in Croatia, marking a significant victory in his illustrious career.

Obiena, who has consistently proven his mettle on the international stage, soared over the competition by clearing a remarkable height of 5.83 meters. This achievement not only earned him the top podium spot but also set a high standard for the year ahead. The event saw him outperforming some of the best in the field, including Portugal's Pedro Buaro, who secured the silver with a jump of 5.73 meters, and Olen Tray Oates from the United States, who rounded out the top three with 5.61 meters.

Celebrating his victory, Obiena took to his official Facebook page to share his excitement and gratitude. "Indoor season [has] finally kicked off. 5.83 for the win here," he wrote, acknowledging the support and the vibrant atmosphere at the event. "Thank you for having us and putting on a great atmosphere," Obiena added, reflecting on the positive environment that contributed to his performance.

This gold medal marks Obiena's first competition since his triumphant outing at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year, where he also finished atop the podium. The victory in Croatia serves as a testament to Obiena's hard work, dedication, and consistency in the sport of pole vaulting.

Looking ahead, the world's number 2 pole vaulter has a busy schedule, with his next competition set at the ISTAF Indoor in Berlin, Germany, on February 23. Following that, Obiena is slated to compete in the prestigious World Indoor Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, where he will aim to continue his winning streak and bring further honor to the Philippines.
