Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the global landscape, and Malaysia is positioning itself as a frontrunner in embracing this transformative technology. As a burgeoning nation with a diverse population, Malaysia recognizes the pivotal role AI can play in catapulting economic and social development. According to the Government’s AI Readiness Index 2020, Malaysia stands tall, ranking 22nd out of 172 countries, showcasing its preparedness to harness the benefits of AI.
Malaysia's commitment to AI innovation is evident through strategic initiatives. The National AI Framework, launched in 2018, delineates a vision for AI development, focusing on key sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and education. Complementing this, the National AI and Data Science (NAID) Platform, inaugurated in 2019, serves as a catalyst for AI research, development, and deployment, bolstering the nation's AI capabilities.
The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) spearheads the digital transformation, catalyzing AI-related programs. Noteworthy endeavors include the AI Talent Development Program, AI Innovation Challenge, and AI for Social Good Program. Collaborations with local and international partners further enhance AI prowess, exemplified by the establishment of Southeast Asia's first AI School in collaboration with Microsoft. This initiative aims to empower students and educators with essential AI skills, fortifying Malaysia's foothold in the global AI landscape.
