OpenAI Unveils Sora, a Game-Changing AI Tool with Deepfake Concerns

In a groundbreaking move, the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, have unveiled a new generative artificial intelligence tool named Sora, raising concerns about its potential impact on the proliferation of deepfake videos. The AI application, revealed on Thursday, possesses the ability to transform written prompts into original videos, showcasing sophistication that has left experts, including AI pioneer Oren Etzioni, expressing a sense of apprehension.

Sora's power lies in its capacity to instantaneously generate 60-second-long videos with highly detailed scenes, complex camera motion, and multiple characters displaying vibrant emotions. The unveiling of this tool comes at a time when generative AI tools are evolving rapidly, leading to implications for various industries and raising ethical concerns about the misuse of such technology.

Oren Etzioni, founder of TruMedia.org, a nonprofit organization combating AI-based disinformation, voiced his concerns about the potential consequences of Sora's capabilities. "Generative AI tools are evolving so rapidly, and we have social networks — which leads to an Achilles heel in our democracy and it couldn't have happened at a worse time," he stated, emphasizing the challenges posed by such advancements during a critical period, especially with the impending 2024 presidential election.

While Sora remains unreleased to the public, OpenAI has granted access to "red teamers," as well as select visual artists, designers, and filmmakers for testing purposes. This restricted access aims to gather feedback and address safety concerns before a wider release. OpenAI has also committed to having safety experts evaluate the tool to understand its potential for creating misinformation and harmful content.
