From Glasgow to Paris: EJ Obiena's Journey of Resilience and Olympic Dreams

Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena, renowned for his prowess on the field, faced a setback with a ninth-place finish at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow. This comes on the heels of back-to-back victories at the Memorial Josip Gasparac in Croatia and the ISTAF Indoor Berlin in Germany, making the Glasgow result particularly disappointing for the world no. 2 pole vaulter.

Expressing his sentiments to reporters on Tuesday, Obiena took full responsibility for the outcome and emphasized the need for better preparation as the 2024 Paris Olympics looms. The indoor season, according to Obiena, was marked by a gamble, attributing his decision to participate to his belief that he could medal and win. However, he acknowledged that things did not unfold as planned and recognized the "human side" revealed in his performance.

Despite the disappointment, Obiena remains resilient and focused on the future. He admitted, "If there's a way to go back in time and actually redo it, I would," illustrating the athlete's commitment to continuous improvement.

Obiena acknowledged the harsh reality of sports, stating, "I move on and I look forward to the outdoor season and prepare and focus on the main goal, which is, again, Paris 2024." Undeterred by the setback, he emphasized that things are "going the way we planned" ahead of the Olympics, signifying his determination to rebound stronger.

In a positive turn of events, Obiena was named as a Filipino athlete ambassador of Visa on Tuesday, underscoring the recognition of his contributions to the world of sports. Looking ahead, Obiena is set to kick off his outdoor season in mid-May, aiming to regroup and showcase his true potential on the global stage. As he navigates the challenges of elite athletics, EJ Obiena remains a symbol of resilience and determination, ready to soar to new heights in pursuit of Olympic glory.
