Philippine Supply Vessel Targeted by Chinese Coast Guard near Ayungin Shoal

In a distressing turn of events, a Philippine vessel carrying crucial supplies for Filipino troops stationed at BRP Sierra Madre was seriously damaged after being targeted by water cannon blasts from China Coast Guard (CCG) ships near Ayungin Shoal. The incident, which occurred early Saturday morning, highlights the rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, as well as the obstacles that Filipino soldiers face in the region.

According to updates provided by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Unaizah May 4 (UM4), a civilian-contracted ship tasked with transporting supplies, sustained heavy damages as a result of continuous water cannon attacks from two CCG vessels. The CCG's actions not only impeded the voyage of UM4 but also posed significant risks to the safety of its crew and the security of the supplies onboard.

The sequence of events leading to the altercation reveals a pattern of aggressive behavior by the Chinese maritime forces. At past 6 a.m., a CCG vessel performed a dangerous maneuver by crossing the bow of UM4, initiating a series of confrontations. Subsequently, the CCG executed a reverse blocking maneuver, nearly causing a collision as UM4 approached Ayungin Shoal.

The situation further deteriorated as the Philippine Coast Guard escort vessel MRRV 4409 was impeded and encircled by a CCG vessel and two Chinese militia ships, isolating it from the resupply boat. Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, condemned the actions of the Chinese maritime forces, citing their disregard for international maritime regulations, including the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).

The most alarming development came right before 8 a.m. when the CCG began deliberately targeting and hitting the supply boat UM4 with water cannon blasts. Videos released by the PCG depict the sustained assault endured by the Philippine vessel, further exacerbating the already tense situation.
