Highlights from the 65th BAFTA Television Awards

Since its inception in 1955, the BAFTA Television Awards have acknowledged excellence in the British broadcasting business through their distinguished presentation, which has now reached global audiences. The event's reach has spread from North America to South Africa, Norway to Australia and New Zealand, drawing spectators throughout the world, including on P&O cruise ships and in the Middle East.

This year's event took place at London's renowned Royal Hall, with a star-studded red carpet. Comedians Bob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan hosted the evening's festivities, which included appearances by Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Jeff Goldblum, and Martin Freeman.

The anticipation was high as nominees were announced in March 2024, with "The Crown" and "The Mirror" leading the pack. However, surprises emerged as shows like "Slow Horses," "Happy Valley," and "The Sixth Commandment" garnered significant nominations. Notably, "Succession" claimed victory with Mathew Macfadyen's supporting role.

In a twist, lesser-known French series like "Class Act" triumphed over heavily watched contenders in the International category. Newcomers like Hannah Waddingham, David Tennant, Bella Ramsey, and Elizabeth Debicki made their mark, with Jasmine Jobson and Timothy Spall securing wins for their standout performances.

"Squid Game – The Challenge" clinched the reality category, while perennial favorite "Strictly Come Dancing" shone in the entertainment genre. Sarah Lancashire's gripping portrayal in "Happy Valley" earned her the Leading Actress accolade, with the show's poignant moments trumping David Beckham's Netflix documentary.

The ceremony paid heartfelt tributes to industry luminaries who passed away, including Ray Stevenson, Matthew Perry, and Annie Nightingale, reminding us of their enduring legacies. As the curtains fell on another remarkable BAFTA Television Awards, it showcased the finest talent and celebrated the power of storytelling that captivates audiences worldwide.
