UAE Rises to Third-Largest Global FDI Market in 2023

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has risen to the third-largest foreign direct investment (FDI) market in the world, exceeding its fourth-place ranking from the previous year, demonstrating its investor-friendly policies and economic resiliency. With a strategic focus on improving business environments, the UAE continues to attract significant investment, cementing its position as the Arab world's second largest economy.

The UAE received $23 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2023, according to a recent analysis by the data and analytics company GlobalData. This FDI was obtained for 1,277 projects that included important industries like business and professional services, software and IT services, and financial services. This remarkable inflow of capital highlights the country's appeal to foreign investors looking for secure and profitable ventures.

Glenn Barklie, principal economist and head of FDI services at GlobalData, highlighted the UAE's appeal as a safe haven for investors, attributing its success to a ripple effect wherein successful ventures inspire further investment. Barklie also noted a surge in project activity in Abu Dhabi, complemented by Dubai's status as a leading global destination city since 2021.

Global companies are increasingly establishing a presence in the UAE, drawn by new governmental initiatives such as the opening up of 100 per cent foreign ownership of companies, relaxed visa restrictions, and incentives for small and medium enterprises. The country's commitment to fostering a conducive business environment has yielded record FDI, with ambitions to attract Dh550 billion ($149.7 billion) in FDI by 2030 and ultimately reach Dh1 trillion by 2051.
