Why Southeast Asia is Drifting Away from Washington

The geopolitical landscape of Southeast Asia is undergoing a tectonic shift. For decades, the United States was viewed as the indispensable powerthe security guarantor that allowed the region’s tiger economies to flourish. However, recent events, culminating in the devastating economic fallout of the Iran war, have accelerated a trend that many in Washington failed to see coming: Southeast Asia is increasingly looking toward Beijing, not out of ideological love, but out of pragmatic necessity. This shift is not merely a preference for one superpower over another; it is a profound vote of no confidence in the predictability and reliability of Western leadership. Indonesia Introduces Special Visas to Attract Foreign Investment

With its novel concept, Indonesia grants long-term residency permits to foreign nationals in exchange for large contributions, known as the "Golden Visa."

How Much Money Do You Need?

1. If you set up a business:

  • $2,500,000 for a 5-year visa
  • $5,000,000 for a 10-year visa

2. For those who are not interested in starting up a business:

  •   Put in $350,000, get a 5-year visa
  •   Put in $700,000, get a 10-year visa

3. For big companies:

  •   Invest $25 million, bosses get a 5-year visa
  •   Invest $50 million, bosses get a 10-year visa

Special Deal for New Capital City

Indonesia has prepared to build a new capital city right in the middle of the jungle. Now, investors can buy their way to residency in this country:

  • $5 million for a 5-year visa;
  • $10 million for a 10-year visa.
According to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, global investors will find it simpler to make investments in his nation. He thinks that the economy of the nation might get better as a result.

About 300 persons have been granted these visas thus far. They succeeded in luring $123 million to Indonesia.

The need for a special dispensation for people whose parents or ancestors were from Indonesia is being considered by the government. As a result, they might be able to travel, work, and reside permanently in Indonesia without necessarily obtaining Indonesian citizenship.

Such facilities are run by a few nations. Some countries, like Singapore and Canada, have eliminated these kinds of initiatives, though. They found that the schemes were ineffective at creating jobs and may be used to launder money instead.
