Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Discussed App Improvements Following his Arrest

After the arrest, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov said on his X page, "I'm still trying to understand what happened in France," and he gave a brief explanation of his concerns and plans for improvements to his messaging program, "Telegram."

Russian businessman and entrepreneur Pavel Durov founded the cloud-based, cross-platform social media and instant messaging app in 2013 with his brother Nikolai Durov. Unpredictably, something unexpected happened in France on August 24, 2024. As part of an ongoing legal investigation, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was apprehended and arrested by the authorities after landing on his private jet in Paris. According to the French police, this messaging software has been aiding in drug trafficking, child exploitation, illicit activity, and the distribution of extremist content. The lack of content filtering on Telegram had alarmed French officials. However, Pavel Durov has denied taking accountability for the enhancements to privacy and content moderation.

Pavel Durov stated that this was a surprise and the French authorities could have informed his Telegram European representative instead of holding him. He has also mentioned that they have cooperated in the past about the app’s misuse and aiding anti-terrorism efforts in France.

After his release after four days on 5 million euros bail, Pavel Durov has opened up about his surprising arrest through posts on his X page and Telegram app respectively.

“I’m still trying to understand what happened in France. But we hear the concerns. I made it my personal goal to prevent abusers of Telegram’s platform from interfering with the future of our 950+million users”.
