The geopolitical landscape of Southeast Asia is undergoing a tectonic shift. For decades, the United States was viewed as the indispensable powerthe security guarantor that allowed the region’s tiger economies to flourish. Why Is Covid’s Origin Still a Mystery? WHO Urges China to Provide Data

The WHO has urged China to provide additional data to help with the investigation of the virus's origins, five years after the COVID-19 outbreak started in Wuhan. Wuhan was placed under lockdown as the pandemic spread over the world after the virus was first discovered there on December 31, 2019. There is still disagreement regarding whether COVID-19 originated naturally from an animal spill or as a result of a lab leak.

The WHO has criticized China for withholding data, making it difficult to fully understand the virus’s origins and better prepare for future pandemics. While China has denied limiting access to data, international experts argue that more transparency is needed. In 2023, new genetic data on the virus was discovered, suggesting a possible link to the Huanan Seafood Market, though no conclusive evidence has been found. The WHO urges continued cooperation to uncover the truth and honor the lives affected by the pandemic.
