Flooding in Sumatra Pushes Tapanuli Orangutan to the Brink

The Tapanuli orangutan, a species discovered only in 2017 and identified as the world’s rarest ape, is now facing an unprecedented threat after severe floods hit northern Sumatra. The disaster has further damaged forest areas already weakened by illegal logging and land clearing.

Scientists say the floods have disrupted feeding grounds and forced some orangutans into unsafe territory. With such a small population, even minor ecological disturbances can have lasting impacts.

Environmental organizations are calling for emergency assessments, improved forest protection, and climate-adaptation strategies to ensure the species has any chance of long-term survival. The crisis serves as a stark reminder of how vulnerable isolated wildlife populations are in an era of extreme weather.
